Another Huge Thank You to L.E.T.S. International and their CEO, Mr. Billy Smith.
As an associate of this organization , I was honored to be asked to observe and document several days of a new (seven months old) Interdiction Unit here in the state of Florida. As continuing education in scent discrimination wherein it applies to "search and search techniques" this opportunity was excellent!
After only being in existence for seven (7) short months - this group works together like a fine tuned machine. This group is
NO
dog and pony show
Starting with a little warmup exercise - their "practice" began - only most of their practice was the real thing. Working directly with local agencies, first stop was the Grayhound Bus Station where the dogs were in and out
and back in, checking fast and effectively then moving on.
When the dogs pointed to luggage - it was pulled and searched closer. Arrests were made on the spot.
After the bus station this team took no breaks but went to a near field and set up the "suitcase drill".
I was watching men and women working together even though they required different things from their dogs - passive alerts, active alerts - nothing mattered except the reliability of the dog and the knowledge the handler had in reading his or her dog. This group's abilities are impressive. Instructor. Billy Smith Next stop, Highway Interdiction Again, working directly with local agencies, vehicles were stopped, if indicated, K-9 was called,. Each situation was handled on an individual judgement call basis. Through the control of the dogs combined with the professionalism of the handler, this was the most polite, yet efficient working K-9 unit I personally have ever seen, earning them nothing but praise from the local citizenry. As a Floridian for over 30 years, I am proud to see an Interdiction Team of this quality helping to keep Florida clean.
